Oba Omogbolahan Abdul-Wasiu Lawal was crowned the new and 15th Oniru of Iruland, Vitoria Island, Lagos State on Sunday 7th of June 2020

The Lagos State government had on Thursday announced Lawal, the erstwhile state commissioner for Agriculture, as the Oniru-elect after a protracted tussle over the throne.

Oba Lawal who received the staff of office from the state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu succeeds the 14th Oniru, Oba Idowu Oniru, who joined his ancestors last year.

At the ceremony held within the kingdom on Sunday, governor Sanwo-Olu described “traditional institution as the first systems of governance adding that it would forever remain a strong link to Nigeria’s heritage at all times.“

The governor further stated that “There is no doubt that the future of Iru Kingdom continues to be bright and promising, and that the ascension today of His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdul-Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, marks the start of the next phase of the journey into that future”.
