Eight persons have been confirmed dead in a gas plant explosion that occurred in the Ipaja area of Lagos on Thursday.

Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement said that the incident occurred around 6:00 am, destroying several properties.

A tweet by the emergency response agency disclosed that an initial disaster assessment revealed that eight fatalities have been identified.

Rescue operations are also still ongoing.

About 25 houses (mostly bungalows), 16 lock-up shops and a Primary School have been reportedly affected by the fire from the explosion.

The Ipaja explosion is the second in less than a month after similar incident sadly occurred on Thursday, September 24 2020 around Iju-Ishaga-Ajuwon axis in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State.
